Peru: The Amazon Rainforest Extension - 3 Days

Enjoy 3 days/2 nights exploring the southeastern Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, arguably one of the most bio-diverse and untouched areas of the world.

After a quick flight from Cusco (or Lima), a van ride through some local jungle towns, and a motor canoe ride up the river, we arrive at a wonderful eco-lodge, our base for the next 3 days of unforgettable adventure and exploration. The rustic and comfortable eco/expedition lodge is situated in a lush and beautiful rainforest setting and was built using native architectural techniques and local materials (principally wood, palm fronds, bamboo and clay). Located in the most diverse and beautiful section of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, the area is home to a staggering variety of animals, including giant river otters, monkeys, countless birds of a seemingly unlimited number of different colors, and of course the perennial local favorite; the brightly colored macaw lick parrots.

For 3 days expert naturalist guides will enthusiastically share their vast knowledge of the local tropical ecology, wildlife behavior, and medicinal plants while leading exciting treks through the protected reserve. Their uncanny skills of finding the naturally camouflaged wildlife and identifying the hundreds species of plants and animals are legendary. Adding their insights into the ancient native Amazonian culture and the critical role that the Amazon plays in Earth’s natural cycles, they will leave you with a new and profound appreciation for this threatened natural jewel.

Places Visited:

Amazon Rainforest in Peru, Lima, Puerto Maldonado, Tambopata National Rainforest Reserve Area

Trip Itinerary:
Day 1:

In the morning you will fly from Lima (or Cusco if you are visiting Machu Picchu) for the short, but exciting flight over the Peruvian Andes to the Amazon Rainforest village of Puerto Maldonado. Upon arriving, you will be met by your local guide.

After a quick stop at the local office near the airport (where you can safely leave behind any luggage you don't need for the Amazon - duffel bags are available to use if you like) you will travel about 45 minutes through small local towns to the river port. Here you will enjoy an exciting 45 minute motor canoe ride up the Tambopata River to a fantastic eco-lodge (a delicious local lunch is served on the boat).

After arriving at the eco-lodge, your local naturalist guide will take you on a nature walk through the rainforest where he/she will introduce you to the diverse and plentiful ecology of this vast and important jungle and you'll have ample opportunity to view the numerous indigenous birds and animals that call this great rainforest home. Typically on this day your guide will take you to a nearby observation tower where you can climb to the top of the jungle canopy to view the sunset over the tree tops.

Overnight in the jungle lodge. (Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Day 2:

Waking up before dawn, your guide will take on a boat ride at a nearby lake. Along the way you'll experience the musical and unforgettable sounds of the jungle of the waking jungle.

The day will be spent exploring the wonders of the Tambopata area with your guide. Being one of the most wild, untamed, and uninhabited hotspots of our planet, the viewing possibilities are as varied as they are virtually endless. In the afternoon, you may also visit a local Shaman "medicine/healing man" and learn how the locals (and even may modern pharmaceutical companies) use the medicinal properties of the jungle plants and trees for healing.

Overnight in the jungle lodge. (Includes breakfast, lunch and dinner).

Day 3:

Waking the magical sounds of the jungle coming alive, the morning is free to relax and take in the jungle from the lodge or opt for another jungle excursion with the guide. At the scheduled time, you will again be transferred to Puerto Maldonado via motor canoe and further transferred to the airport for your return flight to Lima (or Cusco). Your adventure ends with your drop off at the Puerto Maldonado airport. (Breakfast is included)

- return flights typically are scheduled to arrive back in Lima between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM so that you can make any late evening/overnight flights home from Lima (or continue into Lima on your own).
- we can arrange return flights to go to Cusco (or other cities) at the end of this trip. Please let us know if this is something you'd like to do.

Important Information

All Prices are LAND ONLY. You are responsible for making your own international flight arrangements between your home city and Lima and for arriving at the designated departure location as per the itinerary. However, flights SHOULD NOT be booked until you receive a written guarantee from Head Out Adventures that the Land Only portion of your trip has been fully booked.

This is an eco-tour focused on viewing nature. Nature is not always predictable and as such the local guides may adjust the itinerary to optimize your experience based on what the natural environment is offering at the time. Furthermore, the eco-lodge is remote and while unlikely changes in the environment, nature, weather, etc. could cause itinerary adjustments. This is a natural part of visiting such remote and untouched regions of the world.

Due to the remoteness of the lodge, the lodge only runs transfers between the airport and the lodge at specific times, therefore we must book everyone on specific flights together. Domestic airfare costs are approximate and while unlikely are subject to change upon confirmation with the airline.

Prices are based on double occupancy. For group departures (following group trips to Mach Picchu): If you would like your own room, please choose the optional single supplement at check out. If you do not mind being paired up with a roommate of the same gender, then the single supplement does not apply. For non-group departures, roommate pairing is not available.

NOTE: the lodge runs a generator a few hours a day in the AM and PM (it's far and quite so it can't be heard). At this time it is possible to recharge batteries. Outside of these hours there is no power. In the evening/AM the lights are lanterns, which is beautiful and adds to the quaintness of the lodge. It is recommended that you bring a flashlight and extra batteries (head flash light is best). The lodge also has very limited wifi while the generators are running, but it can't be relied on.
