Azores: The Hawaii of the Atlantic - Group Tour

Often referred to as the Hawaii of the Atlantic Ocean, this quaint and modern Portuguese Island chain also elicits comparisons to Ireland, Iceland, and in unexpected way tropical visions of a real-life Jurassic Park. Join this exciting GECtravel group tour and explore this beautiful remote island with a group of like-mined adventurers. And now with direct flights from Boston, New York, and Canada, this undiscovered beauty won’t stay this way for much longer!

On this trip you’ll tour the quaint modern capital city of Ponta Delgada, the tropical Ribeira Das Caldeiroas Natural Park, visit the small village of Povocao, take a boat tour to see the island from the sea and hopefully spot a whale or two, enjoy a visit to a local pineapple plantation, visit the Furnas & Hot Springs, stop at a local tea plantation, and cap it all off with a visit to the incredible beautiful Lago da las Sete Cuidades Crater which sits at the bottom of an extinct volcano.

Brief Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive Ponta Delgada, Azores Portugal. Group Orientation. Tour of Ponta Delgada
Day 2: Ribeira Das Caldeiroas Natural Park and the Village of Povocao (B)
Day 3: Boat Trip & Whale Watching. PM Pineapple Plantation, Furnas & Hot Springs (B, D)

Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1
Arrive Ponta Delgada, Azores Portugal. Group Orientation. Tour of Ponta Delgada.

Arrive at the Ponta Delgada Airport, Azores Portugal (Code: PDL). Upon arrival, if you purchased the optional airport greet & transfer (available during check out - Highly Recommended), you will be greeted and transferred to the nearby group hotel (arrival instruction will be emailed to you as part of the comprehensive Pre-Departure Dossier we will send you about 3 weeks in advance of the trip). If you did not purchase airport transfers, you make your own way to the hotel.

The trip officially begins with a group orientation meeting held at the group hotel in Ponta Delgada (details provided before departure). Here you will have a chance to meet your GEC Guide, as well as all of your fellow travel companions for what is sure to be the beginning of many great friendships!

You will then head out with your GEC guide to begin your discovery of the island with a casual walking tour of its capital, Ponta Delgada. Together you’ll stoll through the colorful alleys and streets, visiting landmarks such as the city gates and charming botanical gardens. This is also a great time to try some of the Azores’ renowned coffee and Quijada (local cheesecake).

This evening you can spend with your fellow travel mates sampling some of the town’s wonderful restaurants and night life.

Day 2
Ribeira Das Caldeiroas Natural Park and the Village of Povocao. (B)

After breakfast, we head north for a visit to Ribeira Das Caldeiroas Natural Park. This lush green park filled with streams, watermills, mighty ferns, ancient plants and incredible natural beauty will quickly have you conjuring images of a real life Jurassic Park.

After visiting the park, we will pass through the village of Nordeste and head towards the viewpoints of Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada for dramatic and sweeping views of the lush island mountains diving deep into the ocean. We’ll then stop for lunch in the village of Povocao where you’ll have a chance to try one of the local fish delicacies. You’ll also have some free time to stroll around the historic village quarter or relax by the sea. Our return journey back to Ponta Delgada will be via the scenic southern coastal route.

Day 3
Boat Trip & Whale Watching. PM Pineapple Plantation, Furnas & Hot Springs (B, D)

This morning we will experience the magical Azores from a different vantage point as we hop on a boat and explore the island from the sea. Along the way, we’ll also hope for sightings of majestic whales & dolphins, as the Azores are renowned as one of the best spots for Whale watching in the whole Atlantic.

After lunch we head inland to a Pineapple Plantation and discover how this tropical fruit is grown in plenty on the Azores. Here you’ll also have a chance to try some homemade Pineapple Liquor. Afterwards we head to Furnas, home of the famous thermal springs of the island. But first, we’ll enjoy a walk around the Terra Nostra Gardens and visit one of the springs to see how Cozido Stew (our soon to be dinner) is cooked.

Following dinner, what better way to finish the day than to bath in the hot springs. We’ll then make our way back to Ponta Delgada.

Day 4
Lago da las Sete Cuidades Crater and Tea Plantation (B)

After breakfast, we head north for the much-anticipated visit to the crater floor of an old volcano where the scenic lakes of Lago da Las Siete Cuidades dominate. Here we’ll enjoy a walk with picturesque views of the dormant volcano crater. After lunch we head to Europe´s oldest Tea Plantation, where you can try some organically grown tea and discover how this world famous drink is cultivated.

This evening, you can enjoy one last night out for dinner and drinks with you newfound friends/fellow GEC travel mates.

Day 5
Trip Ends.

Today your GEC group trip officially ends in the morning after breakfast. If you purchased airport transfers (available during check out - Highly Recommended), at the appropriate time, you will be transferred from the hotel to the Ponta Delgada Airport for your flight home or your onward destination. If you did not purchase airport transfers, you make your own way to the airport.

This is a GEC small group trip that is open for anyone to join. You can sign up as a solo traveler* OR join with a spouse, friends or other family members. All are welcome!

This tour requires a total minimum group size to run. Please DO NOT purchase your airfare or any personal travel requirements until you receive a written confirmation of guaranteed departure.

Prices are based on double occupancy in twin rooms. If you would like your own room (where available), please choose the optional single room supplement at check out. If you do not mind being paired up with a roommate of the same gender, then the single supplement does not apply.

Visas are not required for citizens of most western countries including the US and Canada (be sure to reconfirm directly with the embassies in the country of your citizenship before departure).

A passport is always required. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months following the last day of the tour.

  • The weather in July is typically very nice in the Azores. Expect warm temperatures and sunny days. That said, it is always good to be prepared for a cool day/evening or a shower or two. Temperatures average about 75 degrees (23C) during the day and 60 (15C) at night. Shorts can usually be worn during the day, but be sure to bring along a coat, sweater and some pants for nighttime and those cooler days.
