The trip officially begins with an early evening Group Trip Orientation meeting held at the hotel (details provided before departure). Be sure to eat before the Group Trip Orientation meeting, as tonight following the orientation, we will venture out on an included tour to hunt for the Northern Lights, one of Mother Nature's most spectacular displays! Leaving after dark we will venture out beyond the city lights we'll go on a hunt for the elusive Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis*. The famous Northern Lights are best seen during the dark months of January and February.

*NOTE: Northern Lights view is subject to Mother Nature cooperating. It is also a natural phenomenon that occurs when solar radiation gets ejected from our sun and gets deflected by the earth's magnetic field, thus can't be predicted. It is also weather dependent and can be blocked by cloud cover.

Overnight Reykjavik

Day 2
Optional 12 Hour South Iceland Day Trip and Northern Lights Hunt (B)

Today offers the group the chance to participate in the most popular of the trip’s optional group excursions; a full day, 12-hour tour through the south coast of Iceland, visiting beautiful landscapes, towering waterfalls, taking a hike on an ancient glacier, and spending another evening hunting for the elusive Northern Lights*.

During the optional 12 hour excursion, we'll depart from Reykjavik about 11:00am, dressed warm and wearing warm winter boots… be sure to be dressed in layers that can be added and removed (you’ll be in a warm van, but also outside in winter weather for extended periods of time).

The first stop will be for a visit to the 180 foot (60 meter) high Seljalandsfoss waterfall where you can actually walk behind the falling water! Next we'll gear up with ice crampons and ice picks (provided by the glacier guide) and take a guided 3 +/- hour hike on Solheimajokull glacier, part of Myrdalsjokull, Iceland‘s fourth largest glacier that covers the infamous volcano Katla. This hike is not technically difficult, but can be physical going up and down hills. It’s suitable for anyone who is comfortable walking on uneven surfaces for a few hours. Next we'll hike around the beautiful black sand beaches, basalt columns and the sea stacks of Reynisdrangar.

In late afternoon we'll then stop at Skogafoss Waterfall. This majestic waterfall is one of the most visited sites in Iceland and comes with a legend that says that a treasure is buried behind it and in spite of someone finding the chest they could not take it with them before it disappeared again.

Finally, as we stop for dinner (own expense), our local guide will seek out the best place to possibly view the famous Northern Lights (as called Aurora Borealis). We'll keep our fingers crossed that we find an evening full of these magical lights during our evening hunt!

NOTE: Northern Lights view is subject to Mother Nature cooperating. It is also a natural phenomenon that occurs when solar radiation gets ejected from our sun and gets deflected by the earth's magnetic field, thus can't be predicted. It is also weather dependent and can be blocked by cloud cover.

Overnight Reykjavik

Day 3
Optional Golden Circle Waterfall Classic Day Trip (B)

Today is your opportunity to join the optional group excursion and venture northeast into the interior to visit some of Iceland's best-known natural phenomena. This popular "Golden Circle" tour includes visits to UNESCO World Heritage Site Þingvellir National Park where the European and North American continents meet, the spouting Geysir and Strokkur hot springs with a famous geyser spouting every 5 minutes or so, Iceland’s famous two tiered tumbling Gullfoss Waterfalls (Golden Falls), ancient volcanoes, Nesjavellir Geothermal field showcasing Iceland's eco-use of nature's underground hot springs to power the entire country, and more.

Overnight Reykjavik

Day 4
Optional Visit to Blue Lagoon Hot Springs. (B)

Today, why not join the group on the optional visit to Iceland's most famous landmark icon; the Blue Lagoon Spa! The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa outside the city where you can bathe in the iconic blue outdoor pools of warm water. This option includes transfers and entrance to the spa and gets us back to Reykjavik with time to grab an optional night out for dinner with your fellow travel mates.

Overnight Reykjavik

Day 5
Trip Ends After Breakfast (B)

Today your GEC group trip officially ends after breakfast. Getting back to the airport is simple and we’ll provide you with complete details in the Trip Dossier that will be sent to you about 3 weeks before departure.

Seasonal Info
Iceland's far north proximity makes it one of the world's best places to view the Northern Lights. During the winter the days are short and the nights long, and it is also the time with the lowest number of days with rain, thus making for the optimal time to visit. Winter also brings fairly cold days and evening. Average daily highs are around 37F (2C) during the day and 30F (-1C) during the evening. It's winter time, so dress warm and in multiple layers at all time. A waterproof/windproof outer layer is highly recommended.
