Close to the palace are some striking French colonial structures including the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Old Saigon Post Office. You'll also visit the Jade Emperor Pagoda, one of the best examples of Taoist temples in Vietnam.

In the afternoon, you'll travel to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible underground network of approximately 125 miles (200km) constructed by Vietnamese fighters during the long struggle for independence. The tunnels contained hospitals, accommodation and schools, and were used as a military base for the Viet Cong in the American War.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

    Day 3:
Mekong Delta Boat Tour (B, L)

Today you will take a full day trip to the famous watery world of the Mekong Delta, just a couple of hours by coach from Ho Chi Minh City. Your first stop will be My Tho, a prosperous town of 175,000 inhabitants in the Mekong Delta. It is famous for its extensive orchards and immense rice fields. From here you'll take a cruise on the Mekong River to explore the delta and visit the islands. Here, you'll have chance to visit a coconut candy workshop and taste fresh candy - a local specialty - and enjoy some local tropical fruits, honey, tea and listen to traditional Southern Vietnamese music. You'll then board a small boat to discover a natural canal of Ben Tre province where you can take a short walk in the coconut farm to visit a typical house in the Mekong Delta. On your return you'll visit Vinh Trang pagoda before arriving back to Ho Chi Minh city.

Overnight in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

    Day 4:
Ho Chi Minh to Danang, My Son & Hoi An (B)

Once arriving, you'll be greeted and driven to visit the capital and religious center of the former Champa Kingdom at My Son. Here, 25 miles (40km) southwest of Hoi An, in a lush green valley, are dozens of red brick towers and sanctuaries dating from between the seventh and thirteenth centuries.

    Overnight in Hoi An

    Day 5:
Hoi An Tour. China Beach. Hue. (B, L)

The ancient architecture of Hoian is a fascinating combination of Vietnamese traditional buildings with Chinese and Japanese influence. There’s plenty to see in this delightful town, some of which are the famous Japanese Covered Bridges, Pottery Museum, 200 year old Tan Ky House, Chua Ong Pagoda and vibrant market. Today we include these on a walking tour past many low tiled houses scattered along the small streets and assembly halls, which reflect the town's multi-cultural past. A local restaurant for your lunch will be a great local experience. Later, on the way to Hue, you'll stop at the Marble Mountains, the beautiful China Beach and Non Nuoc Beach, Cham Museum in Danang city, and then continue over the scenic Hai Van Pass to Hue, Vietnam's last imperial capital. This small and quiet city is widely known for its magnificent historic architecture, pagodas and royal tombs laid in many small villages and the surrounding hills.

    Overnight in Hue

    Day 6:
    Tour Hue (B)

In the morning you'll be met at the hotel by your local guide to take a short drive to explore the massive Hue citadel built in 1832 and containing the Imperial City and the Purple Forbidden City. This Royal Residence of the Nguyen dynasty was destroyed during the 1968 Tet Offensive, but is being restored by the work of talented local artists. The trip continues to Minh Mang Mausoleum located on Cam Khe Mountain by the Perfume River and constructed in 3 short years (1840 – 1843) by 10,000 workers & artists. The Minh Mang emperor was the 2nd King under the Nguyen Dynasty who further united the country's alliances and changed the name of the country to Dai Viet to reflect the increased power and influence in the region and internationally.

You'll then board a Dragon boat for a cruise down the Perfume River to visit the Thien Mu pagoda before heading back to Hue.

    Overnight in Hue

    Day 7:
    Hue to Halong Bay (B)

At the appointed time, you'll transfer to the airport for an hour flight to Hanoi. Arriving in Hanoi, you will be greeted and driven 3:30hrs to the World Heritage site of Halong Bay, truly one of Vietnam’s most scenic and impressive sites of outstanding natural beauty and certainly a highlight of the tour. Tonight you will overnight at a hotel in Halong bay.

    Overnight in Halong

    Day 8:
Boat tour of Halong Bay (B, L)

After breakfast you'll be taken to the harbor and board a junk for a four-hour cruise around Halong Bay, made world famous by James Bond in Tomorrow Never Dies. You'll have the opportunity to explore the picturesque scenery and some 3,000 limestone islands rising vertically from the emerald water. The extraordinary limestone kart formations are full of hidden beaches, grottoes and beautiful caves. Along the way you'll make a visit to one of the many hidden grottoes beneath the cliffs to explore the natural wonders here. After a seafood lunch on board, disembark and return to Hanoi, stopping en route at Dong Trieu pottery village.

Close to this site is the One Pillar Pagoda, whose origin dates back to the foundation of Hanoi a thousand years ago. Your tour of Hanoi continues with a trip to the remarkable Temple of Literature, well known as Vietnam’s first university. In the afternoon you’ll enjoy the impressive Ethnology Museum dedicated to Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. You'll then continue to the peaceful lake of Hoan Kiem. In front of this lake is the famous Water Puppet Theatre where you'll see a fantastic performance.

    Overnight in Hanoi

For those who are continuing to Laos on the optional 4d/3n trip extension, transfer to the airport for your flight (see below).

OPTIONAL: 4 day, 3 night Trip Extension to Laos

    Day 1:
    Fly Hanoi to Vientiane. (B)

With an early start, you will fly from Hanoi to the Laos city of Vientiane. After being picked up at the airport and checking in to your hotel, you'll join our local guide for a tour to discover the charms of Vientiane, a quiet but endearing capital city.

Your tour begins with Wat Sisaket, which was built in the Siamese style of Buddhist architecture with a surrounding terrace and an ornate five-tiered roof. Wat Sisaket features a cloister wall with more than 2,000 ceramic and silver Buddha images. Next you'll visit Wat Phra Kaew, built between 1565 and 1556. Wat Phra Kaew was the former home of the Emerald Buddha, which now resides in Wat Phra Keaw in Bangkok.

You then visit the famous sacred That Luang Stupa, a gold covered Buddhist stupa established in the 3rd century and a national symbol. Finally you visit the imposing Phatuxay Monument (or "Victory Gate" or "Gate of Triumph") which is dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France.

    Overnight Vientiane

    Day 2:
Visit to UNESCO World Heritage Site Luang Probang. (B)

In the morning, you transfer to the airport for your flight to Luang Probang, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This beautiful city was the royal capital and seat of government for the Kingdom of Laos until 1975. The main part of the city consists of four main roads located on a peninsula between the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers.

Your visit will start with the Wat Visoun, a temple constructed during the reign of King Visounarat around 1520. In 1942 it was turned into a Museum of Religious Arts and houses collections of Buddha images and religious artifacts. A short drive along the Nam Khan river brings us to Wat Xieng Thong, one of the most important temples in Laos.

A short walk will take us to Wat Mai built in 1796, then we'll visit the National Museum. You'll finish the day's trip with a climb up the steps of Phou Si Hill for panoramic views of the peninsula where the Nam Khan River meets the Mekong River.

    Overnight Luang Prabang

    Day 3:
Mekong River Boat Trip. Pak Ou Caves & Local Villages. (B)

Today you board a traditional slow boat for a trip on the famous Mekong River. This majestic and vial river runs from the Tibetan Plateau high in the Himalayan Mountains, through China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and empties into the Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam. The Mekong, or "Mother River" is the second richest area of biodiversity in the world, exceeded only by the Amazon. While off-the-beaten-path, Laos' beauty is beginning to draw tourists from all over the world. Protected by the Mother River, Laos remains one of Asia's least visited and most unchanged countries, so you are lucky to be visiting it before the hordes of tourists soon discover it.

During your trip, you'll stop to visit the holy Tam Ting Caves (also called the Pak Ou Caves) where the Nam Ou river meets the Mekong. Here the caves are filled with over 4,000 intricately carved Buddha statues to celebrate where Buddhism first started in Laos.

Continuing along the river, you'll visit some local villages and have a chance to interact with the friendly locals of Laos.

    Overnight Luang Prabang

    Day 4:
    Trip Ends. (B)

Trip ends today after breakfast. Make your way to the airport for your flight home OR hotel pick up and transfer for those who purchased airport transfers through us.
