Roam the quaint streets and shops of Queenstown; relax in a cafe drinking some delicious coffee; relax at the hotel or lakeside; take the skyway tram to up into the hills above Queenstown for dramatic views, some hiking and/or a ride on the famous luge sled course; sign up in town for one of the many available local activities like jet boat rides, bungy bridge viewing, rafting, river boarding, scenic flights, etc., etc.

Regardless of how you spend your free day, join your fellow travel mates for another fun night out for dinner and drinks in Queenstown.

Day 3
Day tour to Milford sound (sub to weather)

Early in the AM we'll join others on a larger day tour and embark on a breathtakingly scenic journey to Milford Sound and experience the world-famous fiord in all its glory with a cruise on its pristine waters. Leaving Queenstown, travel past tranquil Te Anau, along the Eglinton Valley and through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2km underpass drilled through solid rock. Along the way we'll also experience The Chasm, a short but impressive walk over footbridges spanning powerful waterfalls and rapids.

At Milford Sound, we'll board our scenic cruise and explore the fiord. See glacier-scarred rock walls, lush native forest and waterfalls that tumble through valleys and crash into the sea far below, as well as the dramatic profile of Mitre Peak, rising out of the fiord to a height of 5,551 feet (1,692 meters) above sea level. After our cruise, we'll return to Queenstown by coach.

Overnight in Queenstown.

Day 4
Day tour to Mt Cook with Optional Scenic Helicopter Ride (sub to weather)

Today we continue our exploration of the South Island by joining another local tour from Queenstown to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, home to New Zealand's highest mountain. We'll travel north through the historic gold mining region of the rugged Kawarau River Gorge and past Cromwell, crossing the Lindis Pass and arriving at Omarama for morning tea (own expense).

We then continue through the rugged high-country landscape of the Mackenzie Basin to Mount Cook Village, where you can gaze up at the 12,316 foot (3,754 meter) high mountain Aoraki / Mount Cook, an important landmark in Maori mythology (the indigenous local culture of New Zealand). Here we'll enjoy the views from the iconic Hermitage Hotel over a delicious three course lunch (optional extra). There is also the chance to take off on a scenic flight over snow-capped mountains and ancient glaciers (additional cost, weather permitting – this can be arranged with your driver/guide on the day). Following our lunch stop, we depart Mount Cook Village and retrace our journey to Queenstown, arriving in the early evening.

Overnight in Queenstown.

Day 5
Optional NZ Winery & Wine Tasting Tour

Today, if you purchased the option, we head out on a wine tasting trip to the famous Central Otago Region of New Zealand.

Central Otago is New Zealand’s highest and the world’s most southerly wine region situated at latitude 45 degrees south. Ringed by mountains and interlaced with lakes and deep river gorges, this is New Zealand’s most spectacular vineyard setting.

The inland mountainous location provides a semi-continental climate with very cold winters, hot summers, cool night time temperatures and very low rainfall. This unique climate combined with the mostly glacially derived soils, with rich deposits of mica and schist, is ideally suited to Pinot Noir (80% of the plantings), producing expressive and elegant wines.

The region also successfully produces a variety of white wines including Riesling, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. The wines of Central Otago have a purity, intensity and vibrancy reflective of the region’s terroir and pure mountain air.

The main grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Sparkling Wines. Source: New Zealand Winegrowers – nzwine.com
