Detailed Itinerary:

Day 1:
Arrive in Cape Town. Group Orientation.

Arriving at the airport, it's a quick and easy ride to the designated hotel in downtown Cape Town (we will provide some options in the Pre-Departure Dossier send a few weeks before departure). In the late afternoon, meet your GEC Trip Leader and your fellow group members in the lobby of the start hotel for the Trip Orientation meeting (meeting details and picture of your Trip Leader will be in the Pre-Departure Dossier). Later, why not join your Trip Leader and group members for an optional dinner and a night out on town.

Day 2:
Cape of Good Hope Peninsula & Coast Day Tour. (B)

Today we will take an included day tour down to the famous Cape of Good Hope. Traveling along the spectacular coastline of the Peninsula and through charming historical villages, we will visit the meeting place of two great oceans; the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Along the way, some of the highlights may include:

We return to Cape Town in the early evening. Tonight, again join your GEC Trip Leader and fellow travel mates out for an optional dinner and night on the town.

Day 3:
Optional Shark Viewing Tour (B)

With so many exciting options in this beautiful city, we wanted to leave a day to allow you to experience activities that appeal to your specific interests. So today is a leisure day. You can spend it at leisure and walk around town, relax in a coffee shop, go shopping, take a boat ride out to the famous Robbin's Island (where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years), go for a half day hike of Lion's Head Mountain (the 'small' mountain in downtown Cape Town), take a taxi to one of the nearby beaches, or even take an evening cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain for sunset and night views of Cape Town from above.

OR, you can sign up for today’s exciting optional side trip and join the group to visit the world's most famous Great White shark hunting ground: Gansbaai's Shark Alley. Just 2.5 hours from Cape Town, you’ll you can stand on the deck of a boat and view the majestic Great White Sharks up close in their own natural habitat. And while the ship may offer you the option of getting in a wet suit and steel cage to view the sharks underwater, please note that this is independent and separate from our itinerary and if you choose to get in the cage, it’s entirely at your own risk.

Day 4:
To Stellenbosch Wine Region. Estate Wine Tasting. (B)

Today we head out to the Stellenbosch Wine Region, located just east of Cape Town. Not only is the Stellenbosch region world famous for their amazing wines, but it is also one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world.

We will head straight to one of the most famous wine estates where we will be staying for the next few nights. Located just a few miles from the quaint downtown of Stellenbosch, this peaceful and quiet estate is surrounded by a centuries old working vineyard and offers commanding views of not only the vineyard, but also olive groves and the majestic Helderberg Mountains in the distance.

After arriving at the estate, you'll have time to get settled, have lunch, relax and explore a bit of the estate. Later in the afternoon, we will then participate in a wine tasting demonstration with one of the estate's experts. The night is ours to take in the amazing southern sky, including stars and constellations that can't be seen from the Northern Hemisphere, like the Southern Cross.

Day 5:
Optional Wine Region/Tasting Tour (B)

Today, why not join the group on the optional wine tasting tour. We’ll travel to several excellent wineries around the stunningly beautiful Stellenbosch Wine Region to taste a variety of local wines. You can even purchase bottles directly from the wineries to take home or enjoy on your trip. For those who do not choose to join this day tour, the day is yours to spend at leisure at the resort or you can take a taxi into Stellenbosch for a relaxing wander in town.

Day 6:
Leisure Day at Wine Estate Resort in Stellenbosch (B) To Stellenbosch Wine Region. Estate Wine Tasting. (B)

Today is a leisure day to spend as you wish. Relax at the resort and enjoy the several swimming pools, take a treatment at the spa, or take a walk on the miles of walking trails. You can also enjoy a picnic at the winery or enjoy a meal at one of its many restaurants. You can also take a taxi to downtown Stellenbosch and enjoy a wander in the quaint little town. Regardless, the stunning beauty of the winelands is the perfect backdrop for an amazing day of relaxation.

Day 7:
Return to Cape Town. (B)

After breakfast and a relaxing morning at the winery estate, we make our way back to Cape Town. This afternoon, why not take a ride on the cable car to the top of Table Mountain or hike nearby Lion’s Head. Tonight, join the group out on the town for our last night together to celebrate new friends and an amazing trip!

Day 8:
Trip ends. (B)

Trip ends after breakfast. It's an easy ride to the airport to catch your flight home and the Trip Leader will help you pair up if your flight is around the same time as others in the group.

This is a locally guided GEC small group trip that is open for anyone to join. You can sign up as a solo traveler* OR join with a spouse, friends or other family members. All are welcome!
*Solo Travelers: You're in luck! No mandatory single supplements. We provide free roommate matching - unless, of course, you'd prefer a single room which you can purchase during checkout.

This tour requires a total minimum group size to run. Please DO NOT purchase your airfare or any personal travel requirements until you receive a written confirmation of guaranteed departure.

Prices are based on double occupancy in twin rooms. If you would like your own room (where available), please choose the optional single room supplement at check out. If you do not mind being paired up with a roommate of the same gender, then the single supplement does not apply.

A Visa the enter South Africa is not required for citizens of most western countries including the US and Canada (be sure to reconfirm directly with the South African Embassy in the country of your citizenship before departure).

A passport is always required. Your passport should be valid for at least 6 month following the last day of the tour.

During the optional activities and day tours, we may be joined by other passengers outside of our group.

Please note that certain countries periodically enforce small tourist room taxes to all visitors staying at a hotel. Should the hotel be required to collect this tax during your stay, you will be required to pay the tax directly to each hotel at either check in or before checkout. The charges must be paid directly to the hotel by EACH PASSENGER and cannot be covered or pre-paid by a tour operator per common government rules. Room tax isn’t always charged, but if it is it is typically small; usually the equivalent of a few dollars per person, per night and subject to change.

Seasonal Info
  • South Africa's summers (November to March) are generally warm with average temperatures around 77 Fahrenheit (25 C) during the day and low to mid 60's (17 C) at night. Winters (June to August) can get quite cold, especially at night with temperatures averaging around 50 Fahrenheit (10 C). In the Western Cape area (Cape Town and Stellenbosch), summers are dry and most of the rainfall comes in the winters. Conversely, in the north (Johannesburg and Kruger Park) rainfall is heaviest in the summer months.
