We start this tour off right with a visit to the famous Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven.
- Tiananmen Square: The largest city square in the world
- The Forbidden City: The largest imperial palace in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties with a history of around 600 years
-The Temple of Heaven: The place where the ancient emperors used to pray for God's blessing of the whole nation
- Summer Palace: best preserved and the largest imperial garden in China.
Overnight in Beijing
Optional Tour of the Great Wall of China (B, L)
After experiencing the royal lifestyle, today (if you choose the optional tour) we will be transferred to the surrounding countryside of Beijing and visit the Great Wall, the pride of China, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Whereas Genghis Khan contemplated it as a military obstacle, Richard Nixon described it as one of humankind's greatest achievements. You will be able to climb and walk on one of the best-preserved sections of the 2,000 years old ancient wall, while admiring the splendid mountain views. Bring a jacket as it can be breezy, and comfortable shoes for lots of walking.
In the afternoon we will visit the legendary Ming Tombs, which are situated at the foot of Heavenly Longevity Mountain, Changping, northwest of Beijing. Since there are 13 Ming emperors buried there, this place was called the 13 Ming Tombs. You will walk along the Sacred Way, a road guarded by stone statues on both sides, as the ancient emperors did to hold a memorial ceremony for their ancestors. In addition, you will encounter the marble tombs of the Ming Dynasty emperors. We’ll also make a quick shopping stop at a local workshop on the way back.
On the way back to the hotel, if time permits we'll drive past the main 2008 Beijing Olympic venues for an exterior visit of both the Beijing National Stadium (Bird's Nest/Olympic Stadium) and the National Swimming Centre (The Water Cube).
Overnight in Beijing
Bullet Train Beijing to Xi’an (B)
In the morning, we will transfer from the hotel to the train station where you will say goodbye to your Beijing based local guide and board the ultra-modern bullet train for an exciting 4-5-hour ride through the countryside to Xi’an. Arriving in Xi’an, we’ll meet our Xi’an based local guide and transfer to the hotel and have the evening free.
Overnight in Xi’an
Terracotta Warrior tour (B, L)
Today we visit the incredible Terracotta Warriors and Horses, as well as the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and a local workshop to see how traditional “China” ceramics are made.
-The Terracotta Warriors and Horses: One of the greatest archaeological findings of the century. We will visit the army of terracotta warriors and horses, and the bronze chariots entombed in vast underground vaults at Emperor Qin's tomb.
-Big Wild Goose Pagoda: A well-preserved ancient building and a holy place for Buddhists.
Xi’an. Fly Xi’an to Shanghai. (B, L)
This morning you’ll visit the Ancient City Walls of Xi’an, which are some of the oldest city walls in China and still encompasses the center of Xi'an today. We are then transferred to the airport, say fairwell to our Xi’an based local guide and board our group flight to Shanghai. Arriving in Shanghai, we will be met by our Shanghai based local guide and transfer to the hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to relax and enjoy this bustling and wonderful city with your fellow travel mates.
Full day Shanghai tour. (B, L)
Today we will enjoy a full day guided tour of Shanghai and find out what makes this vibrant and rapidly growing city so special. We'll visit the famous Bund (Waitan), Nanjing Road, Yu Garden, Jade Buddha Temple, Shanghai Museum and even stop for local crafts.
- The Bund (Waitan): One of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. It is here where the first British company opened an office in 1846
- Nanjing Road: One of the most important commercial and tourist streets in Shanghai, which stretches from Waitan to Yanan Xilu
- Yu Garden: Reputed to be the most beautiful garden south of the Yangtze River. Built beside the Temple of the City God and covering only five acres, it follows the Suzhou garden design of a world in microcosm
- Jade Buddha Temple: The Jade Buddha Temple is one of the few temples in downtown Shanghai. If you're lucky, you can watch the monks performing a ceremony in a side room.
- Shanghai Museum: Situated in People’s Square, the museum is considered one of China’s first and best and boasts priceless Chinese art.
Trip Ends (B)
Trip ends after breakfast. The morning is free to spend at your own leisure. If you purchased airport transfers through us, then you are picked up at the hotel at the appropriate time and transferred to the airport to catch your flight home.
