Of the famous seven peaks in the world, this is the easiest to get to and to climb, and it requires no technical climbing experience. While still a major trek, it's also a major accomplishment to climb one of the 7 summits of the world. With the help of expert local guides & porters, you can summit the highest mountain on the African Continent.
NOTE: While certainly a challenging trek, any moderately fit person can summit the mountain
The Marangu Route is a popular route as it is the only route with the comforts of sleeping huts at every camp site with solar lights and comfortable beds. The huts are communal, and the bunks have a sponge mattress and pillow. There are 60 beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. Mens' and ladies' latrines are available at the last camp but are very basic. All climbing groups, often from several countries around the world, share meals in dining huts providing a jovial and energetic atmosphere. Soft drinks and bottled water are for sale at the huts. Bring small Tanzanian bills to purchase these items (prices increase with elevation).
This route can be done in 5 days but it is VERY Highly Recommended to add 1 extra day on the mountain to help with acclimatization and better your chance to reach the summit (pretty much everyone in the group adds the extra day... plus it's more fun to stay with the group than to break off midway through the trek)
. The extra day can be spent resting at Horombo or climbing the small peak of Mawenzi with your guide.
Have you ever wanted to experience the great animal migration of Africa? Then why not join the group the week after the trek for the Ultimate Africa Safari. See all the details here:
African Safari: The Ultimate Serengeti Safari - 8 Days
the September 2016 Safari will be a luxury version (Feb 2016 will be our normal mid-range safari).

ARRIVE IN TANZANIA
Arriving in Tanzania, if you have purchased airport transfers, you are met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Or you arrive at the hotel on your own. In the evening you will be given a full briefing and trip orientation from your local trekking guide.
TO MANDARA HUT
Elevation (ft): 5500ft to 9000ft
Distance: 12km Hiking Time: 2-3 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
After breakfast and briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate (45 minutes), register and commence the climb. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara encampment located at 9000 ft / 2740 m. A side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colubus monkeys.
TO HOROMBO CAMP
Elevation (ft): 9000ft to 12,100ft
Distance: 15km Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
After about 1 hour, you will leave the glades of the rainforest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. Views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo are amazing. Look for giant lobelias and grounsels. You will start to feel the effects of the altitude.
If you purchased the recommended 'extra day on the mountain', you can spend an extra day resting here at Horombo tomorrow with an optional climb of the small peak of Mawenzi.
TO KIBO CAMP (OR optional extra day on mountain)
Elevation (ft): 12,100ft to 14,400ft
Distance: 15 km Hiking Time: 6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heathland but then disappears into "moonscape". Dinner, rest, and prepare for summit climb.
NOTE: If you purchased the recommended 'extra day on the mountain' you will spend time at the Horombo Camp today, with optional acclimation trek, then head to Kibo Camp the next day
TO SUMMIT AND HOROMBO
Elevation (ft): 15,400ft to 19,300ft(and down to 12,100ft)
Distance: 6 kms up and 36km down Hiking Time: 7 hours up and 1-2 hours down
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman's point located on the crater rim at 18640 ft / 5861 m (4-6 hours). Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa: 19340 ft / 5895 m (1-2 hours). Unbelievable views are at every turn. Be sure to get your picture taken at the summit!
After a bit of time on the summit, you will descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo encampment for dinner and a tired but happy overnight (1-2 hours).
The beginning of the accent climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps and extra batteries. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is, by far, the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. "Pole pole" ("slowly, slowly" in the local langue of Swahili) and an optimistic attitude will get you there!
Elevation (ft): 12,100ft to 5500ft
Distance: 12km Hiking Time:4-6 hours
After breakfast, A steady descent takes us down through the moorlands to Mandara Hut (2700m / 8858 ft), the first stopping place at the Marangu route. Continue descending through lovely lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1830 m / 6004 ft). At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear at the lower levels (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).
A vehicle will meet you at Marangu village to drive you back to the hotel in Moshi. Don't forget to tip your guides and porters. It is time for celebration!
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your trip home if you purchased airport transfers OR continue your adventure with our optional group safari through the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater.
