-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Big views, an amazing culture and an exotic country. That's the best way to describe this exciting combination tour.

First you experience the exotic and fantastic city of Kathmandu (with its famous inexpensive mountain gear shopping), then travel through the Nepalese countryside, and finally get a taste of the Himalaya with a 5 day Poon Hill trek in the famous Annapurna region. Though the trek is comparatively quick, this is a great way to witness incredible views and to experience the thrills of trekking in Nepal without dedicating the 2-3 weeks that is required for the classic mountain treks.

Following part of the classic Annapurna Circuit trail, this trek takes you up to Poon Hill; an excellent spot in Nepal for viewing the incredible sunrise over the Himalaya. This trek also introduces you to the local Nepalese people, culture and villages that can only be accessed by trekking into the mountains. If time permits, you'll even get the chance to soak in the natural hot springs near the end of your trek!

When you return to Kathmandu, why not indulge yourself with one of Kathmandu's famous and inexpensive post-trek-massages... a 'must do' treat regularly experienced by many of the travelers who trek among these amazing mountains.

This trek is a great for those who want to avoid the extreme altitude of the Annapurna Circuit or Base Camp treks, yet still dream of trekking in the shadow of the great Himalayan Mountains.

Arrive at the designated hotel in Kathmandu. Or, if you purchased round trip airport transfers from us, arrive at the Kathmandu airport where you will be met by one of our representatives. You will be transferred in a private vehicle to your hotel and the representative will check you in.

The trip officially begins with an early evening orientation meeting held at the hotel (details provided before departure). Here you will get a chance to meet your GEC Local Guide and get any last minute questions answered.

If you arrive early, the day is yours to relax and enjoy the hotel or visit the exotic, energetic and vibrant streets of the Thamel neighborhood, Kathmandu's exciting tourist district. Don't forget, if you are looking for inexpensive trekking gear, you will definitely find what you are looking for among the hundreds of trekking shops spread throughout the Thamel neighborhood.

Day 2:
Optional Guided tour of Kathmandu (4,200 feet) (B)

Today is a free day to explore Kathmandu or why not join the optional guided tour of Kathmandu. Your English speaking local guide will introduce you to the magic of this amazing city and its peaceful Buddhist culture. The tour will include many interesting attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage City including the old Royal Palaces in Durbar Square, the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath and Buddhist temple of Swayambhunath.

The afternoon is a great time to pick up any last minute personal equipment you may need. Kathmandu is a great place to buy supplies for your trek, such as extremely inexpensive, yet quality warm weather clothing, sleeping bags, snacks, etc. Get a good night of sleep tonight, as tomorrow starts your trek to Poon Hill and the Annapurna Region!

Day 3:
Drive Kathmandu to Pokhara (B)

In the morning you will take the 5-6 hour drive from Kathmandu, through the Nepalese countryside, to the town of Pokhara via private vehicle. Along the way enjoy panoramic views of Annapurna and Manaslu Mountain range, Nepalese farmer villages, and the wonderful countryside of Nepal. The afternoon is free in Pokhara to explore this peaceful lakeside town and its wonderful views of the mighty Annapurna range, including Machhapuchhre Mountain (a.k.a. Fish Tail Mountain), considered by many to be one of the most beautiful mountains in the world.

Day 4:
Pokhara to Naya Pul and Trek to Urlleri (6,905 feet - 5 to 6 hours - about 6 miles) (B, L, D)

Getting an early start, travel with your Sherpa guide (and a Sherpa porter who will carry your 1 main bag) through lovely villages to the town of Naya Pul, where you will begin your trek. From Naya Pul, your trek follows the main trail along the river and steadily up the valley to Tikhedhunga village and Urlleri where you will spend the night in a traditional Nepalese tea house.

Day 5:
Urlleri to Ghorepani (9,350 feet - 4 to 5 hours - about 6 miles) (B, L, D)

Leaving Urlleri after a hearty breakfast, you will cross a stream and climb a stone staircase to the village of Magar. From here, the trail leads you through lush forests, farming villages and across sparkling streams. As you climb, the views open up and the mountains seem to get closer and closer, including your first views of iconic “Fishtail” Mountain. You will spend the night in the village of Ghorepani at the bottom of Poon Hill.

Day 6:
Ghorepani to Poon Hill (10,500 feet) to Tatopani (8,268 feet 6 hours - 6.6 miles) (B, L, D)

A pre-dawn ascent brings you to the top of Poon Hill where you will witness a stunning sunrise over the Annapurna Mountains. After taking in the breathtaking sunrise, you will return to the lodge for breakfast, then begin your decent by trekking to the village of Tatopani. The trek to Tatopani consists of a beautiful walk along and over a ridge and through an intriguing rainforest of moss covered rhododendron, maples, and coniferous trees.

Day 7:
Trek to Jhinu Danda Hot Spring (6,365 feet - 4 hours - 4.5 miles) (B, L, D)

Continuing your decent, the trek is easier as you walk down through a shaded and moss covered forest loaded with hundreds of streams and waterfalls that started life up in the nearby peaks. You’ll pass through many small villages and cross many suspension bridges along the way, ending in Jhinu. Jhinu is a small area with only a few guest houses surrounded by rice paddy fields. A 15 minute walk from the guesthouse brings you to the Modi River, who’s source begins at Annapurna Base Camp. Here you’ll find the Jhinu Danda Hot Springs, a nature spring set along the riverside where you can soak the tiredness out of your legs… a well-earned treat after a long trek.

Day 8:
Ghandrung to Dhampush (3,446 feet) (2,691 feet - 3 hours - 5 miles) (B, L, D)

Today your trek takes you through a number of picturesque villages and farms where you are greeted with smiles and waves from the friendly children and adults of the area. You’ll have great views of the mountains as you trek to the village of Dhampush, today’s destination.

Day 9:
Dhampush to Trail End to Pokhara (2,691 feet - 2 hours - 3 miles) (B)

The final day of your trek starts with a final sunrise view on the Himalayan Mountains. You’ll then trek about 2 hours to reach the trail end where you will be picked up and transferred to Pokhara where you will again spend the evening. Be sure to get out and enjoy the many restaurants and bars that dot Pokhara.

Day 10:
Pokhara to Kathmandu (B)

In the morning, you will travel 5 to 6 hours by vehicle from Pokhara to Kathmandu. The evening is free to once again explore the fascinating city of Kathmandu.

Day 11:
Trip ends after breakfast. (B)

The trip ends after breakfast. If you purchased round trip airport transfer with us, then (based on your flight time) you are picked up at the designated time and transported to the airport for your flight home. OR, while you are in Nepal, why not join one of our trips to Tibet and/or Bhutan?
